Humans naturally have small organisms that live on them. Some remain on them for life, while others make their way off and on the human body.
What are Lice?
Head lice are tiny parasites that live atop the human head and feed off of the blood from the scalp. They will not just go away on their own. Head lice must be treated in order to be eliminated from the human head.
As the temperature drops and we move into the fall and winter season, the reports of head lice outbreaks begin to increase.
Lice bugs are about the size of sesame seed and contain six tiny legs, three on each side. They grasp onto human hair and feed off of the head to survive. Lice eggs are about the size of a poppy seed and are stuck onto the hair shaft with a glue-like substance close to the scalp.
Where are Lice Found?
Head lice are species specific. This means they only affect humans and humans cannot pass lice onto animals and vice versa. There are the types of lice – public lice, head lice, and body lice. Each of these types of lice will survive only in the area that it affects.
Lice can be found all over the world. Usually younger children are affected by head lice the most. Head lice spread by crawling quickly from head to head, they cannot jump or fly.
Since younger kids are usually in close contact with one another at school, camp, day care, or slumber parties, they are most commonly affected. There are 6-12 million people in the US that get head lice annually.
Avoiding Head Lice
Head lice are most often spread through direct contact, by lice crawling from one head to another head, but sometimes lice spread through indirect contact. Sharing of hats, blankets, plush toys, and hair tool can cause someone to contract lice.
Teaching children to not share personal items and putting their hair up in a bun can reduce their chances of contracting lice. There are also natural lice repel products that you can use daily.
Head lice do not discriminate, they do not care about hygiene, socioeconomic status, or race. Head lice will infest anyone that has hair.
If you suspect that you have head lice, act immediately before it spread to others in the household. There are all natural lice treatments on the market that will get rid of lice and eggs in one day.
