Hearing your child has head lice can be devastating news; some parents will immediately have to start making arrangements to miss work because it can be very difficult to find someone who will babysit a child during business hours; especially one with head lice. Other parents will have to think about the social stigma that is usually associated with head lice, while some parents will have to concentrate on how to stop their other kids from getting a head lice infestation too.

But let’s stop for a second and think about the methods we use to diagnose head lice. Usually, the most common method involves simply taking a comb and going through a person’s head, scalp, and hair looking for tiny white dots and crawling bugs. And while there is nothing wrong with this method, some people think it is not very accurate since these tiny white objects can easily be mixed up with dry skin, lint, dust, hardened oils, or other particles that tend to stick to our hair.

Performing Lice Checks

This is why some doctors and health professionals recommend using florescent lights for lice checks, these fluorescent lights highlight white particles in our heads and are supposed to make it easier for us to identify nits and lice. Unfortunately, the fact that they highlight white particles also means that the particles we mentioned before like dust, dry skin particles and lint will also be highlighted; making it much harder to identify actual head lice and nits. So,  should fluorescent lights be used for lice checks?

Fluorescent lamps work using the principle of fluorescence, this is the emission of light by an object that has absorbed electromagnetic radiation, and in this case, objects absorb the light created by the low pressure mercury vapor lamp found in fluorescent lighting. Since white objects tends to absorb more light than objects of any other color, these white objects can be easily identified when using a fluorescent lamp in the dark.

There are some other products on the market that use this basic principle to make it easier for users to identify head lice and nits; for example, a hair spray that highlights fluorescent objects has become very popular in recent times in order to help parents identify a possible head lice problem. But is this all necessary? Should fluorescent lights be used for lice checks?

Identifying Lice and Nits

Head lice and nits can be identified with the naked eye almost unequivocally. After all, they are visible in natural light and most people will be able to spot them using no special equipment at all. In the worst of cases, when people are not entirely sure of what they’re looking at, a magnifying glass can be a helpful, an inexpensive tool that will certainly help you identify lice and nits. When looking for head lice it is important to remember that in most cases you should be able to spot the 6 legs on the bug, which is a dead giveaway. When looking for nits, remember to look for round, white masses that can be usually found in the actual strands of hair. If you are still having trouble differentiating actual lice and nits from other particles, you can take a sample of the particles using a stainless steel comb and look at the sample using a magnifying glass or even some natural light.

On the other hand, some people might still find it difficult to identify head lice and nits under natural light and this is where a fluorescent lamp can be quite helpful. In this case, what you’ll want to do is grab your lamp and go to a dark room. Once again, if you have a magnifying glass, this could be helpful; turn on the fluorescent lamp and look for lice and nits using the magnifying glass. This might present a problem due to the fact that other particles found in the hair will be highlighted by the fluorescent lamp, but some people find it easier to find head lice and nits using the fluorescent light method.

Regardless of what method you use to identify lice and nits, it is important to know that with the help of ClearLice, natural head lice treatment, you can get rid of lice and nits in one day.
