Hi my name is Leanne and I’m from Denver and I have a 5 year old who is in kindergarten. We have had a lice infestation at my daughter’s grade school and she was on her third round of bugs. We tried the Cetaphyl solution treatment but is tortourous for my girls since they both have long hair and took about an hour to dry their hair. Here are some tips to keep your child lice free!

Explain to your children to never share hats, combs, pillows, ear buds or helmets.

Keep long hair up in a pony tail or braid.

Lice like clean hair — not dirty! Don’t shampoo every day, and use products to coat the hair shaft making it hard for a louse to attach to it.

Do weekly head checks. Sit under a bright light and comb through tiny sections of the hair — focusing on the “hot spots,” such as the back of neck, behind ears and the part lines. Nits (eggs) will be grayish in color and glued 1/4 inch from the top of the hair shaft. If it is hard to remove, it is a nit and not dandruff.

Lice-removal treatments are now available that are more effective and safer than traditional over-the-counter products. A woman in Brisbane, Queensland, received a surprise when she contacted the city council to complain that her nephew had caught headlice after using a communal helmet while riding one of the city’s hire bikes. Officials told Aileen Quilkey that not only that there was just a “miniscule” chance that the helmet could have been to blame, but also that youngsters aged under 18 were not allowed to ride the bikes in the first place.

Nits are actually more visible than lice – usually because there are so many – however people seem to know less about them.

Here is what a nit looks like, up-close and personal!

Nits are more readily seen even though they are only about 1/16th of an inch long.

They are most often found along the hairline at the back of the head and neck and behind the ears.

The color of the nits is variable (white, grey, dark brown, or somewhat translucent).

Nits should not be confused with an accumulation of hair spray, hair gels or dandruff.

Dandruff can be easily flicked off the hair; nits cannot because they are firmly attached to individual hairs.
