Time to learn who these pesky critters are and what they are doing to you!
There are 3 kinds of lice:
Head
Body
Pubic
Who they are:
Lice are flat-bodied, grayish-black, wingless insects about 1/12 – 1/8 inch long, have six legs adapted for crawling (via claws) through hair or on clothing and are not capable of jumping any distance.
All lice feed on blood and must do so every 24 hours or they will die of starvation very fast.
During their life, they can cause intense itching in affected areas and pink papules (small, solid and elevation of the skin). Symptoms:
Persistent itching and redness, particularly on the scalp, on the back of the head, or in pubic areas (depending on the kind of louse).
Reproduction:
All life stages are easy to see.
The eggs, which are called nits, can be recognized immediately: they are white to gray and are glued firmly to the base of hairs.
The nits are attached to their host’s hair with specialized saliva which results in a bond that is very difficult to separate without specialized products such as a nit comb – a comb with very fine close teeth, used to scrape nits off the hair.
An adult female louse will lay 8 eggs a night and after only 7 days a young louse, also called a nymph, will emerge and start to feed. In only 10 days, the nympth will reproduce and go on to develop through three stages.
Adult lice can live for 3 or more weeks.
Treatment:
Specific treatment will be determined by your physician based on: your age, overall health, and medical history, extent of the infestation, tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies, and expectations for the course of the infestation.

Summer brings a smaller season of lice outbreaks thanks to camps, increased play dates, hats, road trips and other travel. We’ll worry about that in a few months…
For now, as kids return from their holiday vacation to daycares, preschools, public schools and indoor extracurricular activities, here are a few tips to help prevent lice from ruining your winter.
Peppermint is a deterrent scent to lice. Buying shampoos and conditioners with this ingredient may help. *As a bonus, it feels great on the scalp!
Once a week, throw backpacks, hats and jackets in the dryer for 20 minutes.
Educate children on the importance of not sharing hats, hair bows, jackets, gloves, pillows during sleepovers and other cloth-type items.
Check your children frequently for head lice. Perhaps set up a calender to check off once a week.
These tips will help, but frequent checks are the best thing you can do. It is always easier to stop at the beginning.
So at the first site of lice… Be sure to get rid of them and their eggs with an effective treatment kit.

Hold a garage sale! De-clutter the house and garage to turn trash into cash.
Changing seasons = changing clothes. Hold a family wardrobe check as you bring out warm-weather clothing.
Sort winter clothing for discards and donations before you store.
Pick a weekend and enlist the family for Spring cleaning. Many hands make light work! Reward the team with dinner at a pizza parlor.
Wash windows inside and out.
Treat any wood furniture/flooring/shelves inside the house.
While at the window area, check drapes and window treatments. Vacuum any dust; send dirtier drapes to the cleaners.
Move furniture and vacuum beneath it.
Dust, EVERYTHING!
Arrange for a spring inspection of cooling systems. Air conditioning firms will give better service when they’re not busy so don’t wait for the first hot day!
Drain sediment from hot water heaters.
Following these tips will not only help keep the feeling of a fresh start going into the New Year, but it will also ensure your spring – fall goes smoothly as well!
